WHAT IS F.I.R.E.?

Mike Jacobson and Harland Merriam introduce what is known as the FIRE Movement. This is an approach and set of actions to achieve financial independence as soon as possible. When you are financially independent you don’t need to work anymore.

In other words, if you want to you can retire whenever you want. How does that sound?

F.I.R.E. takes the first letters of the four words Financial Independence – Retire Early.

The key is to understand the difference between your active income (what you work to get usually by trading your time for dollars) and your passive income (a source of income that comes whether you work or night or as someone calls it “mailbox money” which you make while you sleep.)

The measure of financial independence is having more passive income than you do expenses. In other words, you don’t have to work to pay the bills.
