Retirement can be exciting and fun.  Or it can be really scary.  Which is true for you?

Both of us, Mike Jacobson and Harland Merriam, have experienced the worries and questions that you have likely faced.  We have made it to retirement well and are enjoying it.

Here are three fears we have felt.  We share stories and ways to address them.

  1. Ability to Retire: We emphasize the importance of early and consistent saving, highlighting the benefits of compound interest. Mike shares personal anecdotes about friends who retired early due to diligent planning and others who had to work past retirement age due to insufficient savings.  We stress the need for individuals to assess their financial readiness for retirement and encourage younger generations to start saving early.
  2. Outliving Retirement Savings: The conversation addresses the risk of outliving one’s retirement funds. Harland shares a story about a 75-year-old friend still working due to inadequate preparation.  We discuss the challenges faced by retirees whose fixed incomes don’t keep pace with rising living costs, underscoring the necessity of planning for longevity and unexpected expenses.
  3. Inflation: We discuss how inflation can erode purchasing power over time, making it crucial for retirement plans to account for rising costs.  Mike notes that while some income sources like Social Security are indexed for inflation, not all will fully keep up with actual cost increases.  We highlight the importance of investments that can outpace inflation to maintain one’s standard of living in retirement.

To mitigate these concerns, we advocate for incorporating real estate into investment portfolios, citing benefits such as:

  • Income from Cash Flow: Real estate investments can provide steady rental income.
  • Appreciation: Properties may increase in value over time, offering potential capital gains.
  • Leverage: Using financing can amplify returns on investment.

We have used real estate investments effectively in our retirement plans.  We help other friends identify excellent multifamily opportunities.
