One Key To Prepare For Retirement Surprises

When we were in our 20s and 30s a financial planner said expenses would be lower in retirement.  He gave a few reasons.

You don’t have to save for retirement any longer.

You don’t have to pay Social Security withholding on income from investments.

You might have your house paid off.

All of these would lead us to believe that expenses should be lower.

That was not necessarily our experience.  We have had mixed results.

Life expectancy is longer today.

Downsizing does not necessarily mean buying a cheaper house.

You can reduce or limit your lifestyle, but do you really want to?

Harland and I have experienced something that I have seen in others as well.

Some people might have more income in retirement.

This gives them more options.

Most people have more time to travel.

We have the option to spend money on travel instead of paying Social Security withholding and saving for retirement.

Some expenses can be higher in retirement.  Medical care can increase suddenly and cause a change in lifestyle.

We wanted a solid financial base that gives us options.

We needed a source of income that keeps up with or outpaces inflation.

Multi-family real estate can provide that.

Real estate can provide a steady stream of income and be used as a tool to stay ahead of inflation.

We find the opportunities to invest.

We also use our experience and partnerships to find the best of the best operators.  People with integrity and proven track records demonstrating their ability.
